Excavation Work Compliance

The Model Code of Practice (MCOP) for Excavation Work, developed by Safe Work Australia, provides practical guidance on managing health and safety risks associated with excavation activities. This code applies to various types of excavation work, including bulk excavations deeper than 1.5 meters, trenches, shafts, and tunnels.

Key aspects of the Excavation MCOP include:

  • Hazard Identification and Risk Management: Emphasizes the importance of identifying potential hazards and implementing control measures to minimize risks during excavation projects.

  • Duties of Duty Holders: Outlines the responsibilities of various parties involved in excavation work, such as persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), designers, and workers, to ensure safety and compliance.

  • Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS): Specifies that excavation work exceeding 1.5 meters in depth is classified as high-risk construction work, necessitating the preparation of SWMS to detail the control measures for managing associated risks.

  • Protective Measures: Provides guidance on implementing protective systems, such as benching, battering, and shoring, to prevent excavation collapses and ensure the safety of workers.
