How do you become a Building Designer?
Whilst the requirements vary from state to state in general you must meet the following requirements before you can apply:
- meet the qualification, knowledge, skills and experience requirements
- have successfully completed the any state specific training modules required for the class of buildings you wish to design.
- Meet the Minimum Financial Requirements, hold required insurances and be a fit and proper person.
.Why do I need to attain the CPP40121 Certificate IV in Residential Drafting?
This qualification reflects the current entry point for individuals wishing to undertake the Diploma of Building Design which you will need to attain either all or part of to meet the qualification requirements to apply for the lowest level of Building Design Practitioner Registration / Licence in NSW and QLD.
What do I need to learn to be a Building Designer?
Building design practitioners / licence holders are required to be competent in the following areas:
- advise building owners and/or builders on building materials and construction methods
- apply knowledge of the requirements of the relevant building legislation, regulations and Australian standards to the design (including plans and specifications) of all classes of building and types of construction
- brief and coordinate a range of secondary consultants (such as engineers and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) consultants) to provide specialist advice and recommendations on the design of all types of building and their components
- enable builders to prepare tenders for building projects
- ensure a project’s design, specifications and documentation consider energy rating reports.
- ensure a project’s design, specifications, and documentation consider Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) ratings from AS 3959 Construction of buildings in bushfire‐prone areas
- initiate applications for building permits and liaise with the relevant building surveyor to produce the documentation needed for the permit application
- prepare plans and related documentation for the design and construction of all types of building, for use in relation to building permits. Documentation must include sufficient detail for obtaining building permits and for tender and contractual use
- undertake project administration and monitoring for projects that the practitioner has documented, on behalf of clients.

CPPBDN4106 Investigate materials for construction of Class 1 and 10 buildings
CPPBDN4107 Investigate construction methods for Class 1 and 10 buildings

CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
CPPBDN4108 Draw layout of required services for Class 1 and 10 buildings
CPPBDN4109 Research architectural styles and movements
CPPBDN4110 Set up BIM-capable software and files for building design drafting projects
CPPBDN5101 Produce digital 3-D models of building designs
CPPBDN5102 Produce compliant designs for Class 1 and 10 building
CPPBDN5110 Inspect and assess sites to inform the design process
