CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS: A PRACTICAL FIELDBOOK / CHAPTER 8
    Construction information

    Brief the project team

Begin your brief by identifying the project and the current document set. Explain which drawings answer which questions, then use clear references as you describe the proposed construction.

    Brief the project team

Begin your brief by identifying the project and the current document set. Explain which drawings answer which questions, then use clear references as you describe the proposed construction.

Connect site orientation and features to construction locations, dimensions, materials and specification requirements. Explain relevant environmental requirements. Separate confirmed information from unresolved matters requiring clarification.

Practise with a different drawing set after the worked examples. A useful brief shows where the information came from, not just a list of remembered answers. Your trainer arranges any required assessment and observed workplace or simulated tasks separately.

Worked example: 'This is the current plan issue. The footing tag identifies the item at this location. This reference leads to the detail, and this matching schedule supplies the project-specific information. One note remains unresolved, so I have recorded the question for the appropriate person.'

    C1-A101 — revision R04 · 16 September 2026

Fictional existing-condition drawing. Not for construction. Dimensions are in millimetres unless noted; levels are in metres on a fictional local datum. Use written dimensions, not screen measurements.

A101 places the main building and detached garage inside the lot. DP1 is a drain pit at the low southern frontage; T1 is the eastern retained tree and RW1 the rear garden wall. The legend identifies DB as distribution board and the service line abbreviations. Services are indicative and unconfirmed. Read ENV01 for environmental instructions and SP01 for project requirements.

    Read a proposed building

SO01 adds a small proposed site office to the fictional BP-01 yard. Follow the same building through its plans, elevations, section and schedules.

A good project brief lets another worker follow your reasoning. Start with the project and the current documents. State the requirement, then its source. For the Banksia teaching case, you could say: sheet A one zero one, revision R zero four, shows a three-thousand-two-hundred-millimetre driveway. The environmental record requires protection of drain pit D P one before disturbance. Section A three zero one says a connection design is still required. These statements do different jobs. One gives a dimension, one gives an environmental requirement, and one identifies missing information. A dimension alone does not approve access for a machine. Pause and give your own brief using the drawings. Ask whether someone else could locate each source from your explanation. Keep uncertainty visible, report it to the responsible person and retain the response. Your assessment brief must describe the nominated proposed project using your own reading of its complete source set.

    Find it in the source

Use the source identity, driveway dimension, section reference and environmental instruction already read in the Banksia examples.

    Try it yourself

Give a short brief with one confirmed dimension, one environmental requirement and one unresolved technical item. Cite each source.

Practice only. Your notes clear when you change topics or leave this page. They are not saved or submitted as assessment evidence.

The ridge is 4.80 metres above finished floor: 104.20 minus 99.40. The levels are not Australian Height Datum. The section illustrates the construction system and cut materials; its notes require connection design before relying on connections.
