Read a coordinated architectural set

One proposed building, four ways to read it

SO01 is a small proposed site office in the fictional Banksia Practice Yard. Each drawing answers a different question about the same building. Follow a door, window, room and level through the plan, elevations, section, schedules and specification to assemble a complete description.

Use SO01 to practise reading architectural documents. For assessment tasks P01 and P02, use the assigned BP-01 path documents.

Start with identity, then follow a reference

  1. Open SO-A201. Read its title block: document number, R01, date, A3 paper size, 1:25 scale and document status.
  2. Find the north arrow. Locate D01 on the south wall and follow the tag to the door schedule.
  3. Find A-A. The arrows look west. Open SO-A401 and check that south is on the left and north on the right.
  4. Use the written levels to compare the floor and ceiling. Read the specification to learn what the section does and does not define.

Practise before assessment

These are formative source-reading examples. They do not submit or save assessment evidence.

Which documents tell you W01's location and height?

SO-A201 locates W01 in the north wall. SO-SC01 gives 1800 width, 1200 height and 900 sill above FFL. SO-A301/SO-A401 coordinate its sill 101.200 and head 102.400.

Can you order door D01 from the plan alone?

No. The plan locates it and the schedule gives a nominal 1000 x 2100 opening, material and operation. Frame, clear opening, hardware, performance and the access/threshold design still need resolution. A nominal opening is not an approved procurement size.

Does the line from the apron into D01 establish a usable entrance?

No. It shows where the door faces. SO01's FFL is 100.300 and EA2's centreline is 100.015: a 285 mm difference. The approach, landing and threshold have not been designed.

Check the project before combining information

BP-01 describes the yard and path; SO01 describes the proposed office within that yard. Read the two sets together where the office meets the apron or another site feature. C1 Banksia House and C4 Riverbend describe different sites. Their dimensions and specifications do not apply to SO01.
